Why Catch Basins Need Cleaning Before Storm Season

A catch basin is designed to hold back sediment, sand and debris so it never reaches the storm system. That is exactly why it fills up. Once the sump is packed, the basin stops catching anything and water starts backing up across the surface instead of draining through it.

The damage shows up first as standing water in a parking lot or at a curb line. Left long enough, it becomes undermined pavement, blocked storm lines and the kind of repair that costs far more than a service visit.

Our vac trucks pump the basin out, remove the accumulated sediment and debris, and haul the material away. Crews check the structure while they are in there — a cracked basin or a choked outlet pipe is easier to deal with before the first heavy rain than during it.

Long Island's heavy weather tends to arrive in bunches. Property managers who schedule basin service ahead of the season generally spend the season doing nothing about drainage at all, which is the point.
